  3. List brain/body habits that may be affecting your ability to thrive in your next phase
  4. Identify areas for mentoring/networking that will compliment/develop your strengths
  5. Create an action plan with solid next steps to create a purposeful, balanced transition

Weren’t we asked what we wanted to be when we “grew up?” As often as we were asked, we all should have chosen jobs we love by now, right? If that is the case, then why are over half of all working Americans unhappy at work¹? Are you what you wanted to be when you grew up?

Believe it or not, most of us are hard-wired to display tendencies toward certain vocations. In her book, Quiet: The power of introverts in a world that can’t stop talking, author Susan Cain (2012), cites studies that reveal how children in infancy already display tendencies toward being either an introvert or extrovert. In my career sessions with clients, I often ask them to recount what they did when they “played” as young children, as play frequently reveals future vocational themes. Our wiring even extends to neurological preferences in how we process information and in which parts of our brain are more active in a given scenario. How (what) did you play as a young child? Did you play more often alone, or as part of a group?

Did we miss the clues growing up that should have led us to the right vocation? Probably not. What happened to most of us is that the day came when we needed to earn a living and we jumped at the best job option we had at the time. Now, years down the road, we find ourselves with a lot of expertise in a vocation we never really chose to begin with. Are you disengaged at work? Has stress from your work life made its way into other life areas such as health and relationships? Are you transitioning from military service to civilian life and you have no idea how to translate your service to a “regular” job?

There is only 100% of you. How many of the factors listed in the image below are you giving attention to on a daily basis? When we are out of balance it affects all areas of our life. If we have to direct more energy to our work life for example, we draw that additional energy from somewhere else. As a result we often suffer in another area through stress, lack of sleep, depression, or poor nutrition and set ourselves up for inflammation and illness. If this becomes our new “normal” over time; it can lead to chronic disease or something worse.


Anything that persistently works against our strengths and balance creates stress. When we prioritize where we direct our energy and reduce the “noise” of life aspects that demand energy with no real value in return, we can improve our life balance and THRIVE.
